Runners couldn’t have asked for better racing conditions at the 4th Annual Salute to Our Veterans 5K, held Saturday morning at Liberty State Park. With bright sunshine, a light breeze, and crisp fall temperatures in the low 50s, the scene was set for fast times on one of New Jersey’s most scenic courses. The flat and lightning-quick route wound along the waterfront, offering participants panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty—a fittingly inspiring backdrop for an event honoring those who have served.

In a thrilling finish that had spectators on their feet, Francesca Lama surged past Andres Lozada in the final straightaway to claim the overall victory in 19:46, edging Lozada by just one second. Lama’s kick sealed the narrowest of margins as Lozada crossed in 19:47, while Mohammad Hoque and Connor Stapleton rounded out the men’s top three finishers.
On the women’s side, Lama’s winning performance set the tone, with Christine DiIorio finishing strong for 6th overall and Sans Dina Merant taking 9th overall to complete the women’s podium.
The combination of perfect weather, a patriotic theme, and stunning scenery made this year’s Salute to Our Veterans 5K one to remember—an uplifting community celebration of fitness, camaraderie, and gratitude.
