Perfect Conditions for Racing

Runners were treated to near-ideal spring conditions. With temperatures in the 50s, a light breeze, and clear views of the Manhattan skyline across the Hudson River, it was a picture-perfect day for fast times and an enjoyable run. The flat waterfront course—designed to be accessible for runners and walkers alike—proved to be both scenic and speedy.

The Race

The race began promptly at 10:30 AM following a festive pre-race buildup that included packet pickup, music, and a brief ceremony. From the gun, the field spread out quickly on the flat, fast course, which made it ideal for personal bests and aggressive racing. Leading the way on the men’s side was Chris Ruiz, who powered through the course to take the overall victory in an impressive 15:41. His performance set the tone for a competitive front pack and demonstrated just how quick the waterfront route could be.

On the women’s side, Carly Bechtloff claimed the overall title, crossing the line in 20:13 to secure first place. Her strong run highlighted the depth of talent in the field and capped off an exciting race for the top spots.

While the front of the race showcased elite performances, the heart of the event was its inclusivity. As the first annual edition of the Jersey City race, the 5K for Pizza welcomed runners of all abilities—from seasoned racers chasing PRs to walkers simply enjoying the experience and the post-run reward. Adding to the festive atmosphere was the event’s “Best Dressed” competition, where participants showed up in creative pizza-themed outfits, bringing energy and humor to the morning.

Finish Line Festival

What truly set this race apart came after the finish line. Each participant earned not just a finisher’s time, but also two full-size slices of pizza, courtesy of several beloved local pizzerias including Imposto’s Pizza, Park Avenue Pizza, Pizzeria on Pine, Tino’s Artisan Pizza Co., and Pizzeria Las Americas. The finish line festival ran from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM and quickly turned into a lively post-race celebration, where runners refueled, relaxed, and shared stories from the course. Many participants extended the festivities at the official after-party at Greene Hook Bar & Kitchen, just a short walk away, where runners enjoyed drink specials and continued celebrating their achievements.

Looking Ahead

As the first-ever 5K for Pizza in Jersey City, the event was a clear success. With its combination of fast racing, inclusive atmosphere, stunning views, and unique pizza-centric theme, it carved out a memorable place on the local race calendar. Looking for more pizza? Similar races are taking place in the fall in both Hoboken and Seaside Heights. Hope to see you there!
