What a fantastic day it was at the Belleville Veterans Day 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, November 10, 2024! With temperatures hovering in the mid-40s, the weather couldn’t have been more perfect for a run. This popular event gathered runners and walkers alike at Whiskey Priest, a beloved local bar that served as our backdrop for another thrilling year!
CBS 2 News was on hand to cover the festivities, highlighting the spirit of the community and the purpose behind the race, which aimed to benefit our veterans. Let me tell you, it was inspiring to see so many people come together in support of such an important cause!

Dominating the Race
Luis Absalon absolutely crushed the competition! He finished the race in an impressive 18:44, winning by more than a full minute. His strategy and determination were evident as he sprinted past the finish line, and you could see the joy in his eyes! “This race means so much to me, and I’m proud to support our veterans,” Luis stated, beaming with pride. On the women’s side, Michelle Anscher took home the overall title with a remarkable finish of 22:57, placing 12th overall out of 161 participants! Her dedication and speed inspired everyone around her. We can’t help but applaud Michelle for her incredible performance!
This race served a greater purpose. Funds raised will help support veterans of war and the event promoted Mayor Michael Melham’s initiative to raise $50,000 for new, life-saving vests for Belleville police officers. Mayor Melham himself participated in the race, finishing with a commendable time of 25:25, showcasing his commitment to both fitness and community safety! Walking among fellow participants was an experience like no other. Participants donned their best running gear, shared laughs, and cheered each other on! The camaraderie was palpable, and it made the atmosphere feel extra special. Several families joined in on the fun, with kids and adults alike enjoying the chance to run or walk together.

The Belleville Veterans Day 5K Run/Walk was more than just a race; it was a heartfelt tribute to our veterans and an incredible opportunity for the community to come together. A big thank you to everyone who participated and contributed! We can’t wait to see you all again next year for another fantastic event! Keep running strong and supporting our heroes!
